Remembering Don Peppino Diana

Tommaso Ramella

Giuseppe Diana was born in 1958 in Casal di Principe, near Caserta. At ten he entered the seminary, where he attended middle school and grammar school, then moved to Posillipo to continue his studies in theology and philosophy in Naples in order to graduate. In 1978 he joined AGESCI (Association of Italian Catholic Guides and Scouts), where he is captain. In 1982 he was ordained a priest and began working with the scout d'Aversa. E 'in 1989 when Giuseppe Diana, now known to everyone as Don Peppino, he decides to return to Casal di Principe as pastor of the church of San Nicola di Bari has only 31 years Don Peppino, but has already seen and rivers of blood for the streets of his native country: in the 80s in the countryside Aversa had spread a war between the sign of the Camorra Raffaele Cutolo, the New Organized Camorra, and that of Antonio Bardellino, New Family. It 's a veritable "slaughter", only between 1980 and 1981 there are 400 victims. After years of bloody war prevails Bardellino Antonio and founded the clan of the camorra. In 1988, a year before Don Peppino back in Casal di Principe, a erupts within New Family feud leads to the killing of Antonio Bardellino: to take its place at the head of the clan is Francesco Schiavone, known as Sandokan. Soon, however, is a new division between Casale, a group of families headed by De Falco joined forces against Schiavone, in an attempt to take control of the clan. It 'just as the last war between Schiavone and De Falco bloodied the country that Don Peppino arrives in Casal di Principe. The situation is critical: firms, contracts, police, municipality, everything is controlled by the camorra.
Don Peppino decides to react. She realizes that is not enough to give comfort to the victims, we must fight the mob, combat power dynamics, the economic underpinnings, social and cultural rights. On Christmas Day of 1991 Don Peppino distributes to all parishes of the Agro Aversano a document designed to organize the testimony against the Mafia, entitled "For the sake of my people be not silent." Don Peppino openly denounces the Camorra activity, but not enough, throw a strong accusation against the state conniving and corrupt, which is not can provide an alternative way of living in the mafia. Finally, Don Peppino is addressed directly to the Church, asking that it give up its prophetic role and to apply and practice daily in the fight against the Mafia.
After the publication of this document, Don Peppino begins a vigorous fight Casale against: it operates in schools in which information taught, he began to build a reception center for immigrants in an attempt to save them from the Camorra, which attacks the religious rites of the mafia has taken control.
Meanwhile, Schiavone took over the De Falco, whose boss Nunzio said, "or wolf" fled to Spain in an attempt to rebuild an empire. Don Peppino, with its work of witness and protest across the board, constitutes a danger both for the Schiavone for De Falco, but his religious zeal and its complete foreignness to the Camorra they falter even killers. It seems that Don Peppino is protected by armor impenetrable of his honesty, until the morning of March 19, 1994, the day of his feast day, two men enter his church and fired four shots, killing him instantly.
investigations focus immediately around Joseph Square, an affiliate of De Falco, and shortly after the police was contacted Nunzio by the same boss, "or wolf" wants to give their interpretation of the facts. At first the boss denied being the instigator of the murder of Don Peppino, arguing that he could never kill a friend of his brother Mario. Don Peppino was able to convince Mario De Falco not enter the system of the Camorra, a memorable success in the fight against the Mafia, but Nunzio now he serves as an alibi. The boss of De Falco, after declaring that it had not the facts, the accused of the murder of Don Peppino Schiavone. It spreads the news that it was the same Sandokan the instigator of the murder, and denial of the boss does not hesitate: Francesco Schiavone made it known to the family that if they put Diana hands on the square before the police cut into three pieces and threw him in the churchyard of St. Nicholas. At the same time, De Falco plan to cut into three pieces a member of Schiavone and throw it in the church of Don Peppino, put the blame for the murder on the rival clan. Clearly to Don Peppino is a cumbersome body, his death unjustifiable even in a context familiar to the logic mafia. Finally we come to the arrest of Joseph Square, which contradicts the words of Nunzio De Falco and shows the murder as a principal. During the interrogation situation changes often release, indicates several perpetrators of the assassination, but also suggests motives for fictitious drag Don Peppino Camorra in the mud and prevent it from becoming a martyr. Local newspapers, controlled by the Camorra, discredit the figure of Don Peppino in front of public opinion, pointing to alleged sex scandals in which he was involved and debts to influential members of the clan.
The ruling came only in 2003 : Giuseppe De Falco Quadrano and Nunzio are sentenced to life imprisonment respectively as perpetrator and instigator of the murder of Giuseppe Diana. It also explicitly stated that the allegations of square have been intended to sidetrack the investigation to smear Joseph and Diana.
Today, March 19, 2010, is the sixteenth anniversary of the death of Don Peppino, is the day of his name I remember a martyr, because his testimony is not lost.
