Thursday, 18/02/2010, is presented in the Sala della Lupa (lower house) research on the phenomenon of xenophobia and racism in relation to young people: that, of young people under 30 years, 50% are racist.
Before proceeding, we stress the terminology.
You would have us believe that the noun racism, is just the 'ideology sull'arbitrario founded assumption of the existence of human races, biologically and historically higher for the lead, and other lower intended for submission, including theory and political practice agreements, discrimination and persecution, to preserve the "purity and to ensure the absolute dominance of the alleged racial superiority "(Encyclical Treccani). This is the institutionalized racism and historically have arisen: in Nazi Germany, the USA, South Africa.
But racism is defined in a more generic" complex of events and attitudes of intolerance stemming from deep-rooted prejudices and cast by members of the community through forms of contempt and exclusion, against individuals or groups from different cultural and ethnic communities "(again, Enc. Treccani). This second definition of racism, is that we face in Italy.
As always, research they are not satisfied or often fail to represent the reality is that it is, even if it were 50%, but 25% to be racist or xenophobic, is already a very serious situation. If young people fall prey to the prejudices or are fed aversion towards the "Xenos", the stranger, the guest, "that strange, how can we try to limit up to eliminate, or nearly so, these phenomena in Italy? If the young man, who should have a more open mind, free and flexible, thanks to their formal education or even to their life experiences (up to the age of majority if they can have, and many) fall into the "stranglehold" of ignorance perhaps listening to any politician or any party " violent, "as we hope it will not happen to adults, perhaps overly stressed by the difficulties of life to fall into the trap of finding, in the stranger, the culprit of their problems?
Why are the immigrants, on several occasions at various times, to be pointed out as the perpetrators of this or that problem in society. Just remember last year, in 2009: the whole discussion about the crimes committed by Roma, the rapes limelight for a period in the newspapers, the shameful international policy choices in the matter of the immigrants returned to Libya. The year 2010 opened with Rosarno.
What is the point? Immigrants make a lot of work often painful or degrading from our point of view that the Italians would not do? Almost always. Immigrants come here with the request for asylum, because fleeing states where there is respect for human rights, where they die of hunger or where they are persecuted? Almost always.
So why not help them, since you are also a fundamental principle of the Constitution (Article 10)? Why should we think, fear that a migration from this or that country, could endanger (?), destroy (?), our country or our culture?
Should we fear the ' invasion, as it is called by the League, and recently also said the prime minister, people often suffer, which is bound to despair to flee their homeland?
usually positive responses are focused on issues of public policy.
Sure, it happens that some immigrants commit crimes, but there are, for the crimes, the counter (more or less) appropriate, whatever the subject (can cause problems in terms of international law, but Parliament should be the task of solving them).
In conclusion: to advocate that all immigrants are in "good faith" that no one breaks the law, etc.. But neither can we hope to argue that because some offenders, all should be "branded" as criminals, especially if it is to support that 'elite "policy that is not immaculate, and even clear.
Consequently, the argument: immigrants do not want them for our safety, is a statement without meaning.
What should change in Italy, therefore, be reduced so that by racism and the claims of certain parties, to be completely eradicated?
First of all education: in schools, at all levels, must be taught to respect / diversity and why no, civic education, may finally have to understand the meaning of Article 2 and 3 of the Constitution, who speak their own equality.

Then there's the rule: it should encourage the integration, but this would require a clear signal to the political level.
And of course there is us, individuals, we can try to make our best to criticize or take back the racists, not help, but we tried to change things.
And finally there is one last possibility: travel. As much as possible, with destinations in other continents. Because there is absolutely nothing more valuable see with your own eyes how people can be different in their traditions, customs, ... but in the same simple (maybe) that they are all human beings.
